a couple of people have told me off today for continuing to express my opinions. they’ve said that it’s “annoying”, and that I “attack” anyone with an opposing view to my own.
firstly, this is all in response to me talking about sexual harassment and rape culture. apparently it’s “annoying” for…
Firstly, I don’t condone the sexist attitude that men have towards women, and it’s quite disgusting. But since there is very little you (and women in general) can do about it, and that there is little harm in what is essentially a very loud and obnoxious compliment, is it so hard to just accept it as a boost of your self esteem?
A man has just called you hot, from a far, and hasn’t physically attacked you in any way, so in this instance I don’t really understand why you’re so angered by it.
Obviously, when it gets to the stage of “in da club” grinding and actual physical harassment and rape and “well she was asking for it” that is wrong and incomprehensible that it’s even an argument. But I’m not discussing that issue, I am simply asking about why you are so affected by men doing this.
“is it so hard to just accept it as a boost of your self esteem?”
you just told me to see harassment as a compliment, I refuse to engage in any further debate with you.
I don’t think people understand this! When a “A man has just called you hot, from a far”, even if it wasn’t a physical attack, it is still an attack! As a woman you feel utterly uncomfortable and at that precise moment that person has stolen something from you. I’m not sure what it is, security? maybe. All I know is that you feel weird for the rest of the time and sometimes you even hate yourself for having dressed nicely. IT IS NOT A CONFIDENCE BOOST! And I’m not exaggerating this, what Lex describes IS harassment.
I’m not exaggerating. The people that whistle, stare, yell things at you… they can just really ruin your whole night.
